TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — HFX, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization, is set to host a two-day forum in Taipei for the first time beginning this Thursday.
HFX Taipei will feature five public plenary sessions: "Democracy = Opportunity," "Democracy = Resilience," "Democracy = Justice," "Democracy = Partnership," and "Democracy = Security," according to an HFX press release.
Additionally, there will be informal sessions, including "Asia Values: A Free and Open Indo-Pacific," "NATO in Asia? Or an Asian NATO?" and "Never Mind the BRICS, Here’s the CRINKs.”
The forum is supported by United Microelectronics Corporation founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠) and seeks to contribute “meaningfully to Taiwan’s democratic future,” HFX president Peter Van Praagh said in November.
“Taiwan’s vibrant democracy faces unique security challenges and this session will foster a constructive two-way dialogue as international leaders gain insights into Taiwan’s specific security challenges,” Van Praagh said. “It is vital to global security that we come together now to demonstrate democracy’s enduring strength.”
HFX hosts the annual Halifax International Security Forum in Canada. Last year, former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) was awarded the forum’s John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service and delivered a speech calling on global democracies to unite in the face of expanding authoritarianism.
