TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A two-year-old girl critically injured in a suspected gas explosion at a Taichung department store has shown signs of improvement, with doctors reporting stable vital signs.
The child remains in intensive care at Taichung’s China Medical University Hospital following last week’s explosion at a Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store. In a statement on Tuesday, the hospital said pressure on her brain is decreasing, and she will continue to be monitored, per CNA.
Doctors also confirmed that she no longer requires targeted temperature management, a procedure that lowers body temperature to protect brain function after cardiac arrest. Her temperature has now been gradually restored to normal.
The girl was visiting Taiwan with six family members from Macau at the time of the blast. Her two grandparents died in the explosion, while her great-grandmother, uncle, mother, and father sustained injuries.
According to reports, the child temporarily lost vital signs after the explosion and was rushed to the hospital by a bystander. After her breathing and heartbeat were restored, she was transferred to China Medical University Hospital for specialized treatment.
