TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Officials nullified the university entrance exam results of two students on Tuesday after they used concealed cameras to take photos of test papers, while others had points deducted for doodling.
The College Entrance Examination Center said a committee investigation found two students had violated multiple examination rules by photographing their tests, per CNA. One student had all of their exam results canceled, while another had their science exam results nullified.
The center launched an investigation in late January after reports surfaced that an English language exam answer sheet had been posted online before all students had completed the test. On Tuesday, the center confirmed the student responsible was identified through their social media account and details on their examination paper.
Examination rules strictly prohibit the use of cell phones during tests, any actions that create unfair advantages, and sharing test content outside the examination room. Some review committee members reportedly called for harsher penalties, but the final decision was to nullify the student’s results in proportion to the violation.
In another case, an invigilator caught a student recording video of the exam during the science test. That student’s science exam results were canceled.
Another test-taker was found to have called their mother during a toilet break mid-test, resulting in a five-point deduction.
The center reported 661 total rule violations during the entrance exams, leading to various penalties. Among them, 529 students had points deducted for writing unrelated content or drawings on their test papers.
Doodles included sketches of Snoopy, a poem, and, in one case, a detailed map of Taiwan’s railway stations by an apparent rail enthusiast. Each student who engaged in this behavior had one point deducted from their final score.
