TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A historic steam train will take passengers through Alishan’s scenic landscapes this spring, offering a unique way to experience the cherry blossom season.
The Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office (AFRCH) announced that it will operate three special sakura-themed train trips on March 11, March 25, and April 1, with each journey limited to 100 passengers. Online reservations open on Feb. 25.
Tickets cost NT$2,999 (US$92) per person and include train fare, meals, a guided tour by an expert, and exclusive railway souvenirs, according to the AFRCH.
Each spring, Alishan’s cherry blossoms blanket the mountains in shades of pink, creating a breathtaking sight. The AFRCH said passengers can enjoy the vibrant scenery while experiencing the nostalgic charm of the historic railway.
The train will be pulled by the No. 31 steam locomotive and feature carriages crafted from Taiwan cypress.
Taiwan cypress, one of the world’s rarest tree species, is found only in North America, Japan, and Taiwan. The tree grows just one centimeter per decade, adding to its rarity and value, per Taiwan Hinoki.
Alishan photographer Huang Yuan-ming (黃源明) will guide passengers to hidden scenic spots for capturing stunning cherry blossom views. With over 35 years of experience, Huang has taken millions of photos documenting the beauty of the mountain.
Riding the steam train during cherry blossom season has become a signature Alishan experience, according to the AFRCH. One of the most anticipated moments is the train’s departure from Zhaoping Station, winding through the iconic S-curve railway, framed by delicate cherry blossoms swaying in the breeze.
Tickets must be purchased online as they will not be available at station counters. Reservations open at 10 a.m., exactly 15 days before each departure date.
