TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A helicopter on Saturday located the body of a woman hiker 400 meter down a cliff in Nantou County more than two weeks after her disappearance.
The woman named Lai (賴), aged 43, was part of a group setting off on the Mabolasi Trail on Lunar New Year day, January 29. The same day, she fell off the Wulameng Cliff, but because of poor phone reception in the area, the rescue services only heard about the accident the next day, the Liberty Times reported.
A five-member rescue team descended 150 m and only found a walking stick, but no trace of the missing hiker. Due to poor weather conditions, snowfall, and altitude sickness affecting the team, they had to suspend the search.
On Saturday morning, a helicopter took five rescue workers to search the area from the air. They believed they had seen something, so the helicopter lowered the team down by rope to a spot 400 m down the cliff.
They found the hiker’s body but they had to dig her out from under rocks before she could be airlifted to Hualien County, where her relatives and the police were waiting.
