TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Shin Kong Mitsukoshi will pay NT$11 million (US$336,000) to the families of each of the four fatalities of the explosion at its Taichung department store, reports said Saturday.
The fatalities included two members of a family from Macau walking past the store, a female floor manager aged 24, who was found dead near an elevator inside the building, and another floor manager, aged 34, the Liberty Times reported.
Thursday’s explosion also sent more than 30 injured people to hospital. Eleven are still receiving medical care, including a 2-year-old girl who was part of the Macau family.
While the investigation is focusing on the possibility of a gas leak, the department store has been closed, the Liberty Times reported. According to the authorities, staff should continue to receive pay or be transferred to other work during the closure.
Shin Kong Mitsukoshi said it was also starting a psychological support program for employees during the weekend. The program would later be expanded to cover other people affected by the disaster, including staff at other branches.
The department store added it had taken care of the family relatives from Macau as soon as they arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Friday, arranging for transport, lodging, and food.
