TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) was elected as the new chair of the Taiwan People’s Party on Saturday.
TPP's by-election for party chair was held online from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It saw a voter turnout of 47.95% with 9,263 votes cast out of 19,320 eligible voters, TTV and Ettoday reported.
Huang garnered 96.11% of the votes. His opponent, former legislator Tsai Pi-ju (蔡壁如), received 3.89%.
Huang's victory comes after former TPP Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) resigned on Jan. 1 following an investigation into corruption at Core Pacific City. Ko, along with 10 others, was indicted on charges of bribery, profiteering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds. Prosecutors are seeking a combined sentence of 28 years and 6 months for Ko, per CNA.
After Ko's resignation, Huang was unanimously nominated by the TPP as the acting chair. The motion passed 14-1, with Huang being the sole member who did not raise his hand in favor.
During a policy presentation on Friday, Huang outlined his “3+1 Plan” for the party’s development. The first three pillars include strengthening communication, deepening party discourse, and energizing the organization.
The “plus one” refers to a key focus on talent recruitment, which Huang sees as vital for the TPP’s future. He also emphasized the importance of channeling internal dissatisfaction with the current administration into a force for spreading the TPP's ideals.
