TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 2-year-old girl from Macau who was critically injured by the blast at a Taichung department store on Thursday is recovering in intensive care after brain surgery.
The toddler was walking by the store with six family members when the explosion occurred. Her grandfather and grandmother were killed in the blast.
The girl’s parents were bruised but not severely hurt. Other family members had fractures and serious injuries, including burns.
The girl was transferred to China Medical University Children's Hospital and CNA reported she was in a coma. This was due to a brain hemorrhage and swelling.
After brain surgery, she was reported to be three on the Glasgow Coma Scale. This is the lowest score on a scale from three to 15, which indicates full responsiveness.
Taichung Health Bureau Director Tseng Tzu-chan (曾梓展) said there were six people in the intensive care unit due to the explosion. Eight had been admitted to general wards.
As of Friday evening, the authorities said the suspected gas explosion caused four deaths and 35 injuries.
