TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A woman in her 50s was apprehended by police on Friday for cooking dumplings in the waiting area of New Taipei's Xizhi Station.
The Railway Police Bureau reported the woman, surnamed Feng (馮), had an induction cooker and was using the charging area in the platform's waiting room to cook the dumplings. When station staff intervened there was a loud argument, per CNA.
Staff informed Feng the charging outlets were reserved for phone use, but she nevertheless continued to cook the dumplings. Police were called and questioned Feng, who said she was simply resting in the waiting room and not waiting for a train.
Following questioning, the Railway Police Bureau referred the case to the Shilin District Prosecutors Office. Feng faces charges of larceny and endangering public safety under Taiwan's Criminal Code.
According to Article 320 of the Criminal Code, larceny is defined as “unlawfully taking movable property of another with the intent to exercise unlawful control over it for oneself or a third party.”
Also, using high-powered electrical appliances in the charging outlet could cause power outages or interfere with platform and vehicle control systems, posing a risk to public safety. This could lead to charges under Chapter 11 of the Criminal Code, which deals with offenses against public safety.
