TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Saturday called on the Legislative Yuan to offer “unwavering, 100%” support for national defense and foreign affairs following a trainer aircraft crash.
Lai expressed his relief that the pilot had been rescued. He also noted the military's courage in defending Taiwan against threats from China, per CNA.
In January, opposition lawmakers approved a central government budget that cut NT$207.5 billion (US$6.35 billion) from the Cabinet’s original proposal. Lai said he hoped to amend this decision to show support for the military and boost morale.
On Friday, Lai chaired the first national security meeting of the year, saying that a special budget would be prioritized to ensure defense spending reaches over 3% of Taiwan's GDP, UDN reported.
Taiwan will also continue to push forward national security reforms, expand its security network, strengthen societal resilience, and promote internal unity, Lai said.
A T-5 Brave Eagle trainer aircraft crashed off the coast of Taitung on Saturday morning. The pilot was rescued and transported to Mackay Memorial Hospital Taitung, where officials confirmed his condition was stable.
