TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US President Donald Trump on Thursday blamed Taiwan for taking the semiconductor industry from the US and vowed to reshore it.
Two weeks after announcing he would impose tariffs on chips made in Taiwan, Trump said, “Right now, everything is made in Taiwan practically,” per PC Magazine. He was referring to TSMC, which makes about 90% of the world's most advanced chips.
Blaming Taiwan for the decline in chip production in the US, Trump said, “Taiwan took our chip business away.” Criticizing Intel, which sources some of its chips from TSMC, Trump said, “We had Intel, we had these great companies that did so well, and it was taken from us.”
Trump demanded that TSMC relocate all chip manufacturing to the US. “And we want that business back. We want it back in the United States,” he said.
In his plan to use tariffs to bring manufacturing back to the US, Trump said, “If you build here, you have no tariffs whatsoever. And I think that's what's going to happen. I think our country is going to be flooded with jobs,” per Time Magazine.
