TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Shin Chung Natural Gas said there were no gas pipeline issues that could have led to the Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store explosion on Thursday.
According to a press release, the company expressed regret over the explosion and extended its condolences to those affected. The incident injured 26 and killed at least four, per CNA.
Shin Chung explained that its technicians cooperated with Taichung Fire Bureau’s forensic team in conducting a floor-by-floor site investigation. Using specialized equipment, the company said the appearance of the gas pipelines and sealing plugs was normal. They did not detect any probable cause for a gas leak.
Additionally, the company said, in response to Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s renovation request, it had thoroughly sealed off pipelines and removed old meters on Monday. It had not done any work since then.
Shin Chung said it would deploy a team to conduct safety inspections at other major malls in Taichung, including Top City and SOGO.
Meanwhile, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) said after a crisis response meeting on Thursday the department store would remain closed because of the extent of the damage, per CNA. The questions of reopening and fines would be handled after an investigation is concluded.
