TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Police Thursday found a knife and scissors suspected of being used in a series of murders in Kaohsiung.
Kaohsiung City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Corps said that investigators had recovered the suspected weapons used by the suspect, Chang Chieh-tsung (張介宗). These were a serrated knife and a pair of scissors, per NowNews.
Forensic specialists confirmed through biological evidence collected at the scene that these were the tools used in possibly three killings and dismemberments.
Forensic Center Director Hsieh Tung-ho (謝東和) said police found a knife and scissors at Chang’s residence. Biological samples collected from the scissors were matched to the second victim, a woman surnamed Chang (張). Further tests also confirmed the presence of the alleged killer's DNA.
In addition, since the knife is 20 cm long with a 10 cm blade and has a serrated edge, the forensic team compared the cut patterns on the body parts and found that they matched the knife’s serrated design. Based on this analysis, police concluded the recovered knife and scissors were among the tools Chang used to commit the murders and dismember the victims.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether additional tools were used. Reports have circulated that Chang may have used a grinding machine for dismemberment.
However, Hsieh said that forensic analysis of the cut marks and the lack of biological evidence on the grinding machine indicates that it was not used to commit the crime.
Police confirmed that human remains found in waters around the Asia New Bay Area Wednesday had clean cut marks, suggesting Chang may have used additional tools. Police have since deployed more officers to collect further evidence and ensure Chang is brought to justice with no room for denial.
