TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s government has expressed condolences to the people of Guatemala and offered help after a bus crash that killed at least 55 people on Monday.
President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) posted messages on social media after the crash. “We are praying for the swift recovery of those injured, and our hearts are with the victims’ families and loved ones in this time of mourning,” Lai said in an X post.
Guatemalan officials said a bus veered off the road plunging 20 meters into a ravine at about 4.30 a.m. on Monday, BBC reported on Tuesday. At least 55 of the bus’s around 70 passengers were killed in the crash, and police are investigating the cause.
In a statement released by Presidential Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧), Lai instructed the foreign ministry and the embassy in Guatemala to contact the local government to offer help. “Taiwan is with Guatemala as it goes through this difficult time,” Lai said.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning after the incident on Monday, per Reuters. He also sent the army and disaster agency to assist.
