TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has banned the use of generative AI platforms, including DeepSeek, ChatGPT, and Gemini, due to security concerns.
The MND recently issued an order prohibiting military personnel from uploading potentially sensitive information to generative AI services to ensure confidentiality and data security, per Liberty Times.
The directive, issued by the Office of Deputy Chief of the General Staff for Communications, Electronics, & Information, emphasized that AI platforms collect and analyze vast amounts of user data, posing risks to military secrets, personal data security, and intellectual property rights.
As a result, military personnel are now prohibited from uploading or publishing military-related information, personal data, or classified content on generative AI platforms such as DeepSeek, ChatGPT, and Gemini.
The ban also extends to Taiwan-made AI systems, including the Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Dialogue Engine (TAIDE) and the Advanced NCSIST Interactive Language AI (ANILA), developed by the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology for military use.
Additionally, military personnel are barred from using AI tools to draft official documents due to concerns over misinformation and ambiguous output.
The order further warned that AI-generated content may contain errors and instructed military personnel to carefully verify any information before using it for reference.
Lastly, officers and enlisted personnel are strictly prohibited from using generative AI services for illegal activities or actions that violate social morality. The MND stated that legal action will be taken against anyone whose misuse of AI leads to the leaking of national defense secrets or reputational damage to the military.
