TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The annual US National Prayer Breakfast took place on Thursday in Washington, DC with a pair of musicians from the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan leading a prayer for Taiwan before their musical performance.
Established in 1953, the event has been a fixture on the US presidential schedule, with every president delivering a speech since its inception. In 2023, the event was divided into two gatherings: one for lawmakers and government officials and a larger event for private groups.
US President Donald Trump attended both, with the larger event held at the Hilton Hotel. It was at this venue that two Taiwanese musicians performed the hymn “Because He Lives” on piano and trumpet, per RTI.
Before the performance, the pianist, Anita, led the audience in a prayer for Taiwan, asking for divine protection and strength in the face of threats. The prayer called for Taiwan to remain steadfast in hope, peace, and love.
Over the years, several Taiwanese politicians and officials have attended the National Prayer Breakfast. During the Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) administration, former Premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) took part, while under Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), former Legislative Speaker Yu Shyi-kun (游錫堃) and then Vice President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) attended.
