TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A speed skater brought home Taiwan's first-ever medal in the Asian Games on Saturday.
Chen Ying-chu (陳映竹) took bronze in the women's 100-meter speed skating at the ninth Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China, with a time of 10.51 seconds, per CNA. This is Taiwan's first medal in the eight editions of the Games since the country's debut at the second Asian Winter Games in 1990.
Chen previously specialized in inline skating and won six medals at international championships. However, to realize her Olympic dream, she decided to adjust her goals and switched to speed skating on ice in 2023.
This transition required her to master more precise techniques and adapt to the faster pace on ice.
At the Asian Winter Games, Chen is competing in the 100-meter, 500-meter, and 1,000-meter speed skating events.
She made her debut Saturday in the women's 100-meter race. The gold and silver medals were claimed by South Korean skaters, with Lee Na-hyun and Kim Min-sun posting times of 10.501 and 10.505 seconds, respectively.
