TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked members of the US Congress on Friday for reintroducing a resolution calling on the Trump administration to open diplomatic relations with Taiwan, end the “one China” policy, and promote a free trade agreement.
Republicans Tom Tiffany and Scott Free reintroduced the resolution from 2021 with the support of 22 other Republican members of Congress. The normalization of diplomatic relations should allow the two sides to exchange ambassadors and arrange visits by senior government officials, the resolution said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the long-standing support from Congress for Taiwan and the strengthening of bilateral relations, per CNA. The ministry added it would continue to monitor progress during the new term of Congress.
Close contacts with friendly lawmakers and with government departments would be maintained, according to the ministry.
