TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will convene a meeting of the five government branches on Monday in response to “severe challenges in the domestic and international political and economic situation,” the Presidential Office said Friday.
Office Spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) said in a press release that Lai will discuss national affairs and each branch’s constitutional responsibilities. She said that as head of state, the president is aware of the public’s expectations for social unity, stability, and government-opposition conflict resolution.
The meeting will include Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), Judicial Yuan President Shieh Ming-yan (謝銘洋), Examination Yuan President Chou Hung-hsien (周弘憲), and Control Yuan President Chen Chu (陳菊). Kuo said Lai hopes it will create a communication mechanism between the five government branches for national policy consultations.

The meeting will come as party-backed civic groups work on recall campaigns to remove around a third of lawmakers from the legislature. The recall campaigns began after the KMT and TPP used their legislative majority to cut spending for the central government.
Meanwhile, Taiwan faces uncertainty over what Donald Trump’s second term as US president will mean for its economy. Trump has suggested tariffs on semiconductors ranging from 25% to 100% to encourage companies to manufacture in the US.
