TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei International Comics and Animation Festival opened at Nangang International Exhibition Center on Thursday, attracting droves of fans and over 100 vendors.
Before the doors opened at 10 a.m. long lines had already formed outside Hall 1 of the convention center, per CNA. Some fans said they had camped out the night before.
Chinese Animation and Comic Publishers Association head Su Wei-chuan (蘇偉銓) said the five-day convention is expected to draw 480,000 visitors and generate NT$250 million (US$7.6 million) in revenue. Last year, the festival attracted 470,000 attendees over five days and generated NT$200 million in revenue.
The opening ceremony featured a performance by the six-member girl group babyMINT, alongside the festival’s mascot, Manbo, per Liberty Times. Since their debut just over a year ago, the group has gained popularity with hit songs surpassing 100 million views.
Thirty-three events will take place, featuring seven renowned domestic artists, 13 voice actors, and 30 idol groups, per Liberty Times. Overseas guests include Wakayama Shion, the voice of Momo from the supernatural anime Dandadan, and Uesaka Sumire, voice of Meat from Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc.
The highly popular VTuber section returns this year, featuring Taiwanese VTuber agencies such as Limnos and Disorderly Movement. The Ichiban Japan pavilion makes its annual return, featuring 19 underground idol groups and nearly 60 voice actors, singers, and YouTubers for meet and greets.
