TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taipei City Government has advised pedestrians to walk under storefront overhangs as tiles might fall off buildings during the cold weekend, reports said Thursday.
Temperatures north of Tainan are likely to drop to between 7 and 10 C from Friday to Monday, according to the Central Weather Administration. Taipei’s Construction Management Office warned that tiles might fall off the side of buildings due to expansion during warm weather followed by contraction during the cold snap.
Owners or management committees of buildings who neglected safety measures could face fines ranging from NT$60,000 (US$1,800) to NT$300,000, per CNA. Failure to make necessary repairs could also result in default surcharges between NT$5,000 and NT$10,000 per day until the situation is corrected.
If a falling tile injures or kills a passerby, the owner or management committee could face compensation claims, the office said. Taipei residents can apply for subsidies of up to NT$200,000 to maintain safety and conduct repairs to the outside walls of buildings older than 10 years.
