TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s labor bureau said that a bus company and restaurant Sukiya’s parent company were among those fined for repeat labor violations in December.
The labor bureau said on Thursday that Kuang-Hua Bus was fined the maximum allowable NT$1 million (US$30,440) for repeatedly failing to provide staff with adequate rest between shifts, per CNA. According to labor ministry statistics, this was the company’s seventh fine for the same offense since November 2020 and its 21st overall over the past 10 years.
Sukiya and Hamazushi's parent company, Taiwan Shanshang was fined NT$900,000 for allowing workers to extend working hours beyond the legal limit. The company was also fined for not providing workers with at least 30 minutes of rest for every four hours of work.
Labor ministry statistics show Taiwan Shanshang has been fined 12 times over the past two years for either allowing excessive overtime or not providing 30 minutes of rest. It has been fined 20 times overall for labor violations over the last 10 years.
The Taipei labor bureau said Kuang-Hua and Shanshang should increase staff to avoid breaking the law again. It said because both companies are repeat offenders fines will only increase if they do not improve.
Kerry TJ Logistics and Taiwan Airport Service Co. were also fined NT$600,000 each for repeatedly allowing staff to work longer than legally allowed. Lian-an Security Co. was fined NT$240,000 for breaking the law, including paying less than minimum wage and not paying for overtime.
According to the labor bureau’s statistics, failure to pay overtime was the most common violation last year.
