TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Memory manufacturer Winbond Electronics announced Tuesday that its first batch of products made with renewable energy has been shipped to customers.
Greenhouse gases, like CO2, are a primary contributor to climate change. According to the World Economic Forum, electronics are one of eight industries that account for more than 50% of carbon emissions.
Winbond said in a press release that its carbon accounting system monitors electricity consumption and carbon emissions for all products, including in-house wafer production and outsourced packaging and testing, per CNA.
Winbond said by reducing harmful substances and carbon emissions in its manufacturing, it aims to develop energy-efficient products, per Liberty Times. Compared to standard products, Winbond’s green products can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60%.
In addition to manufacturing green products, Winbond said it is dedicated to renewable energy and environmental protection issues. The company approved approximately NT$955 million (US$29 million) in renewable energy investments.
Additionally, in 2023, its Central Taiwan Science Park facility installed solar panels generating 660,000 kWh. From 2019 to 2023, the company saved 456 million kWh of electricity and 4 billion liters of water.
