TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is planting a 3-hectare forest on the Taichung coast to cut carbon emissions, reports said Wednesday.
The project includes planting 44,850 seedlings in the Daan District, per CNA. Over the next 30 years, the new forest should capture around 1,011 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The varieties of plants included sea lettuce, milkvetch root, and wild beans.
A team of experts had researched the plan, and received approval from the Ministry of Environment. Taichung City Government said TSMC is responsible for taking care of the forest for the first three years, with the company and the city joining forces beginning from the fourth year.
Regular joint inspections will ascertain the forest is growing according to plan. Using the project for forest carbon credits would offset the cost of maintenance and contribute to TSMC’s environmental, social and governance targets, the city government said.
