TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Wei Chuan Dragons’ 43-year-old infielder Lin Chih-sheng (林智勝) confirmed Tuesday that this will be his final season before retirement.
At the Dragons’ season-opening ceremony at Douliu Baseball Stadium, Lin said he was starting to get old, per CNA. He also noted that younger players are growing and that it was time to pass the torch to the next generation.
When asked if he would feel reluctant to retire, Lin said he would not, explaining that it is simply part of the journey. Having played over 20 years in professional baseball, he said, “There's nothing to be regretful about. This is a path everyone eventually takes.”
With 304 career home runs, Lin is the only player in Taiwan’s professional baseball history to have reached the 300-homer milestone, per Liberty Times. When asked about his goal for his final season, he said, “2,000 hits, I guess. That’s the only milestone I haven’t reached, so I’ll give it a shot.”
Dragons General Manager Ting Chung-wei (丁仲緯) explained that Lin’s contract for the new season is still under discussion, including the possibility of a coaching role. Regarding Lin’s retirement plans, the Dragons will announce details in a press conference before the season begins.
