TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan officials said on Tuesday over 10 million tourists visited the southern city over the Lunar New Year holiday period for the third year running.
Tainan Tourism Bureau Director Lin Kuo-hua (林國華) said in a press release that this year’s peak occurred over the first four days of the holiday. Lin added that nearly 90% of tourist accommodation sold out over the nine-day holiday period.
Lin said most tourists came for the city’s temples, with more than 5.6 million people visiting the city’s 20 most popular religious sites. “People queued up to light the day’s first incense, light lanterns, pray for wealth, health, marriage, and disaster relief,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lin said bureau statistics showed more than 2 million people visited shopping streets, and more than 1.2 million visited scenic areas. He noted that the city plans firework displays at Orthodox Luermen Sheg Mu Temple on Saturday to cap off the Lunar New Year celebrations.
