TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) opened the Taipei International Book Exhibition on Tuesday, attracting 29 countries and featuring 1,000 activities including lectures and seminars.
In his opening speech, Lai praised learning, saying while investing in stocks carries risks, investing in yourself pays off, per CNA. He said this year’s guest of honor, Italy, has a rich history and encouraged Taiwanese to immerse themselves in different cultures.
“Culture is the foundation of a nation and the soul of Taiwan,” Lai said. “I deeply appreciate our publishing industry, as publishers are the key messengers of culture. I salute you all.”
Culture Minister Li Yuan (李遠) acknowledged budget cuts but affirmed the ministry’s determination to face challenges. He said the Cultural Points program this year has been extended to include 13 to 15-year-olds, allowing them to receive 600 points, per UDN.
Introduced in June 2023, Cultural Points are a subsidy to promote cultural activities. They are given to young Taiwanese to enjoy films, exhibitions, and books.
Li said, despite the cuts, the ministry will still offer free entry to 18- to 22-year-olds using the points, along with a weekday ticket rebate.
Li added he was excited about the Books from Taiwan initiative, which promotes literature abroad by inviting buyers to Taiwan for copyright negotiations.
The expo will run from Tuesday to Sunday. More information can be found here.
