TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two Taiwanese design works have been nominated for Best Recording Package at the 67th Grammy Awards, set to take place on Monday.
Lee Pei-tzu (李珮慈) is nominated for her work on the debut album “Pregnancy, Breakdown, and Disease” by the band “iWhoiWhoo,” while Andrew Wong (黃家賢) and Yeh Chang-li (葉昶利) are nominated for their design of “Jug Band Millionaire” by “The Muddy Basin Ramblers.” This marks a significant achievement for Taiwanese designers, as two of the seven nominated works hail from Taiwan, per CNA.
Taiwan has twice achieved Grammy success in the Best Recording Package category. In 2022, Li Jheng-han (李政瀚) and Yu Wei (于薇) won the award for their work on “Pakelang.” In 2023, Xiao Qing-Yang (蕭青陽) and Hsiao Chun-tien (蕭君恬) received the honor for designing “Beginningless Beginning.”
Lee discussed how the album's design conveys the concept of “sickness” and creates a cultural atmosphere rarely seen in Western works. She expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s rich and diverse cultural background, which she believes inspired the nominated work.
Lee explained that the layered packaging is designed to make unsealing the album an enjoyable experience for listeners. She hopes this journey of discovery mirrors a path toward healing for those who receive the album.
Wong discussed the special significance of The Muddy Basin Ramblers representing Taiwan with their Grammy nomination. He explained that the members of the jazz band are all expatriates living in Taiwan.
For “Jug Band Millionaire,” Wong shared that the packaging draws inspiration from grassroots African-American music from southern US a century ago. The design team spent months researching and gathering materials to recreate Western sheet music, while incorporating traditional Taiwanese elements through traditional Chinese characters.
