TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Astronomical Museum highlighted the blood moon lunar eclipse in September and the Geminid meteor shower in December as the top astronomical sights to behold this year.
The blood moon will be seen in Taiwan from Sept. 7 at 11:28 p.m. to Sept. 8 at 4:55 a.m., per CNA. The most striking colors can be spotted during the peak of the lunar eclipse from 1:31 a.m. to 2:53 a.m., the museum said.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the moon to illuminate a reddish glow. The museum added this will be the first blood moon in seven years.
In addition, the Geminid meteor shower is predicted to peak in Taiwan on the night of Dec. 14. Considered one of the best annual meteor showers, Geminids are unique for being the only known meteor shower to originate from an asteroid.
The Geminids are bright, fast, and usually yellow. In areas with low light pollution, around 150 meteors per hour may be seen, the museum said.
