TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tata Electronics bought a 60% stake in Pegatron’s Indian plants, Nikkei Asia reported Friday.
According to industry sources, the transaction covers Pegatron’s three iPhone assembly plants, key managers, and technicians. However, Pegatron will own and operate non-Apple plants in India, they added.
The deal will make Tata the second-largest Apple supplier in India, second only to Foxconn, the only other iPhone contract manufacturer operating in the South Asian country.
“The acquisition of a majority stake in Pegatron Technology India Private Limited fits into Tata Electronics' strategy of growing our manufacturing footprint,” Tata Electronics Managing Director and CEO Randhir Thakur said. However, neither company has released further details about the deal.
Pegatron operates three iPhone production plants in India, including one near Chennai, Tamil Nadu in South India, per Tech Crunch. The Taipei-based manufacturer employs more than 10,000 workers in India.
Tata has been steadily expanding into India. In October 2023, the Indian conglomerate bought Wistron’s Indian business.
