TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her Latvian partner, Jelena Ostapenko, lost in the Australian Open women's doubles on Sunday, ending her quest to defend her title and missing out on her 10th Grand Slam title.
Hsieh and her partner entered the tournament as the third seed and lost to the second seed, American Taylor Townsend and Czech Katerina Siniakova, by a score of 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3. It was only the second tournament for Hsieh and her partner, and the lack of familiarity proved too much to overcome in the title match, per CNA.
Hsieh and her partner pulled even in the second set, 5-5, but after both sides held their service, the set went to a tiebreaker. Hsieh returned a volley to even the match at a set each.
Entering the decisive third set, both sides broke each other's serve. However, Hsieh and Ostapenko suffered a key break in the eighth game and lost 3-6.
Hsieh congratulated her opponents after the match and joked that she was upset she did not win the bigger trophy. She also thanked her partner Ostapenko for accepting her invitation to compete and all the fans.
