TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck on Monday at 8:18 a.m., centered in Taitung with a depth of 6.5 km.
According to the Central Weather Administration, the quake’s intensity reached level 4 in Taitung and Pingtung and level 2 in Kaohsiung, Hualien, Tainan, and Chiayi. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The CWA said the earthquake reached the threshold for the Public Warning System, with cell phone emergency alerts sent to residents of Pingtung and Taitung County, per UDN.
Another magnitude 4.1 quake struck at 12:35 a.m. on Monday centered in Tainan’s Nanxi District, with a depth of 13.4 kilometers. It has an intensity of 3 in Tainan and Kaohsiung and 2 in Chiayi, Yunlin, and Changhua.
This was followed by a magnitude 4.5 quake at 2:06 a.m. in Tainan’s Dongshan District. The epicenter was 42.9 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall with a depth of 8.5 kilometers. The intensity reached a 4 in Tainan and Chiayi County.
According to the CWA, six earthquakes were centered in the Chiayi and Tainan area from 12:35 a.m. to 4:45 a.m. on Monday. The frequency of seismic activity in this area is associated with a magnitude 6.4 tremor centered in Tainan’s Nanxi on Jan. 21, which toppled 10 single-story residences and injured 26 people.
