TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taichung hotel is under investigation by the Ministry of Health and Welfare following reports of food poisoning earlier this week.
The Taichung Food and Drug Safety Office reported that 14 individuals who attended a year-end party at The Lin Hotel on Jan. 24 exhibited symptoms of suspected food poisoning, per UDN. On Jan. 25, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agents inspected the hotel restaurant and collected food samples for testing.
The FDA took eight food residue samples and penalized the restaurant’s management for failing to comply with proper hygiene practices. The restaurant’s operations have been suspended until Jan. 28, with a follow-up inspection scheduled for Jan. 29.
Should the establishment fail the follow-up inspection, it could face fines ranging from NT$60,000 (US$1,800) to NT$200 million (US$6 million), per UDN.
All 14 affected individuals were discharged from the hospital after brief treatment.
During the Lunar New Year holidays, when people often gather for large meals, the FDA has emphasized the importance of following proper hygiene practices. It encourages the public to remember the “Five Do’s” and the “Two Don’ts” to ensure food safety.
The “Five Do’s” are:
- Wash hands thoroughly before eating.
- Use fresh cooking ingredients.
- Keep cooked and raw foods separate during preparation.
- Serve and consume food that is properly cooked.
- Store foods in clean containers at appropriate temperatures.
The “Two Don’ts” are:
- Avoid drinking untreated water from outdoor sources.
- Do not consume unknown plants or animals.
The FDA also advises seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms of food poisoning occur and saving meal samples for analysis if possible.
