TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Several ferry services between Taiwan’s main island and Matsu and Penghu have been canceled for the first weekend of the Lunar New Year holiday due to rough seas, the Maritime and Port Bureau said Saturday.
The services affected on Saturday and Sunday included the lines between Keelung and Matsu, and between Jiangjun in Tainan and Dongji in Penghu, per CNA. On Monday, there will be no ships between Taitung and Green Island, while on Monday and Tuesday, services between Taitung and Orchid Island have already been canceled.
The bureau called on travelers interested in visiting or returning home to Green Island and Orchid Island to head there during the weekend but to keep watching updated travel information.
The cancellations come at the start of the Lunar New Year holidays, one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Between Jan. 25 and Feb. 2, people are traveling for family reunions and sightseeing.
While people staying on land during the holiday may experience a cold spell, travelers heading for the outlying islands Saturday will likely face rough seas with wind forces of 6 and 7, and peaks of up to wind force 9, meaning severe gales.
