TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Infielder Chiang Kun-yu (江坤宇) signed a contract worth over NT$147.88 million (US$4.5 million) with CTBC Brothers, the team said Friday.
The 24-year-old shortstop’s monthly salary has been raised to NT$660,000 this year, per CNA. After the contract’s fifth year, Chiang’s monthly salary will increase to NT$1.2 million, with the possibility of reaching NT$1.5 million in the final three years.
Additionally, after seven years, Chiang will get a player option, which is the right for a player to continue the contract or play as a free agent, per Liberty Times.
CTBC Brothers General Manager Liu Chih-wei (劉志威) said since 2020, Chiang has shown outstanding performance, excelling on offense and defense. His game-reading is among the best among young players, he added.
“After discussing the details, we recognized Chiang’s determination to continue wearing the yellow jersey, leading to this 10-year guaranteed contract,” Liu explained. “We look forward to his continued outstanding performances.”
Previously, the only Taiwan baseball player without overseas experience to achieve a monthly salary of NT$1 million was Lin Chih-sheng (林智勝), per UDN. Likely, Uni-President Lions’ Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) and Rakuten Monkeys’ (林立) Lin Li will also become million-dollar monthly earners.
