TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck under the Pacific Ocean east of Hualien County Wednesday at 7:55 p.m., the Central Weather Administration said.
The quake struck 25.9 kilometers south-southwest of Hualien County Hall at a focal depth of 10.2 kilometers. The epicenter was located in the township of Fenglin.
The quake’s biggest intensity level reached level 4 in parts of Hualien and Nantou. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake was not linked to the magnitude 6.4 temblor which hit Chiayi County in the early hours of Tuesday. That quake caused damage to housing and roads in Chiayi County and neighboring Tainan.
