TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Authorities said 74 aftershocks rattled Chiayi and Tainan by midday Wednesday after an earthquake struck the area the day before.
The Central Weather Administration said 19 aftershocks were at magnitude four or above and were mostly felt in Tainan’s Nanxi and Nanhua, per CNA. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said the shakes had been a shock to residents.
Huang said structural technicians began appraising damaged buildings in Tainan on Wednesday. He said some buildings would be repaired and some completely rebuilt.
Tainan City Government said 53 houses were damaged, 29 people were injured, and 27 infrastructure items including roads and bridges were damaged in the shake. Huang said earthquake victims will be treated the same as those affected by the 2016 southern Taiwan earthquake.

Meanwhile, Chiayi City Government said 11 roads have reopened after the Tuesday shake, and power to 9,286 houses and water to 527 had been restored. It said one person fainted and one bruised their shoulder in the earthquake. Both have been discharged from hospital.
The city government said there were cracks and other damage in public buildings including an elementary school. Repairs for the school are expected to cost NT$7 million (US$213,548) while other buildings will only require repainting, it said.
The initial magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck east-northeast of Tainan City Hall just after midnight on Tuesday. Shaking was reported throughout Taiwan and on the outlying islands.
