TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s delegation to the inauguration of United States President Donald Trump met with members of Congress Tuesday, hoping the Senate would soon pass the US-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act.
The House of Representatives approved the proposal on Jan. 15. Delegation leader Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) thanked the House members for their efforts, while predicting Taiwan-US relations would grow even deeper.
The legislative speaker and seven other members of the Legislative Yuan from three parties arrived in Washington, D.C. during the weekend to attend the Trump inauguration. Meetings with senior US politicians, think tanks, and Taiwanese residents were also on the agenda.
The Taiwan representative office arranged a lunch with 18 Congress members, followed by visits to offices, Radio Taiwan International reported Wednesday. Han said the lunch discussions focused on defense, national security, and US arms sales to Taiwan.
Congress member Don Beyer from Virginia said he was enthusiastic about the visit, friendship, and alliances.
House member Keith Self said the meeting signaled that both countries stood together in the Indo-Pacific from start to finish. He urged the Trump administration to complete the delivery of weapons systems Taiwan has already ordered.
