TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Saturday rebutted China's claims to Taiwan and reiterated the country's sovereignty and independence.
US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he held a phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) on Friday, but did not mention Taiwan. China's foreign ministry cited Xi as saying during the call, “The Taiwan question concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US side needs to approach it with prudence.”
When asked Saturday by CNA to respond to Xi's comments, MOFA said it closely monitors high-level interactions between the US and China. It said that China's press release on the phone call once again unilaterally put forward erroneous claims about Taiwan's sovereignty.
The ministry stressed that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to one another. It said this is “a long-standing, objective fact and is the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.”
MOFA said it looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with the new Trump administration based on the solid and friendly foundation of Taiwan and US relations. It added that it will seek to deepen the close security and economic and trade partnership between Taiwan and the US, and jointly promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the region.
