TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s delegation to the US for President Trump’s inauguration arrived at JFK Airport in New York on Saturday evening, where they were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.
Led by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), the bipartisan group of legislators spent time interacting with the crowd, with Han distributing couplets to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year. The delegation will stay in New York for one night before flying to Washington, D.C. on Sunday, CNA reported.
More than 50 overseas Taiwanese reportedly gathered at JFK Airport to welcome the lawmakers, expressing their support for Taiwan’s representation at the event.
Due to cold temperatures, the US government decided to move the inauguration ceremony indoors, meaning the Taiwan delegation will not attend the event in person. Despite this change, the group’s core itinerary for their Washington visit remains intact.
After the inauguration on Monday, the delegation is scheduled to attend a banquet hosted by the American Veterans Association in the evening. On Tuesday, they will visit the Capitol to meet with US lawmakers and later attend a banquet organized by Taiwan’s representative office in Washington to engage with overseas Taiwanese residents.
The visit will conclude on Wednesday with trips to two Washington think tanks as well as media engagements, UDN reported.
