TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taipei Zoo will unveil its newest resident, Thabo the pygmy hippopotamus, to the public on Sunday.
It is hoped he will follow in the footsteps of Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand last year who became a global celebrity. Thousands of people lined up to watch the baby animal, foreign business leaders donated funds, and the zoo licensed souvenirs.
Thabo arrived from Singapore in November, but first had to grow accustomed to his new home, his neighbors, and the cooler weather, per CNA. Following one month of quarantine, the male animal rapidly developed an appetite and lost his fear of his older pygmy hippo neighbors.
The next stage was to let him outside, where he found food and played in the water, showing he was healthy and ready to face the crowds, zoo officials said. The public will be allowed to see the pygmy hippo in the African wildlife area on Sunday.
The zoo asks visitors not to knock on the glass wall separating them from Thabo, nor use flash photography, and not to touch or feed any animals in the area.
