TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission cleared Advanced Micro Devices' plan to acquire ZT Systems on Wednesday, saying it would not restrict competition in Taiwan’s market.
The FTC said in a press release that AMD produces semiconductor components widely used in consumer electronics products. Meanwhile, ZT mainly designs and manufactures servers for large firms.
The FTC said that Intel and Nvidia hold a greater market share than AMD in markets for consumer graphics cards and processors. As such the company will still face competition if the deal goes ahead.
The FTC added businesses operating on the same supply chain as AMD have indicated the buyout would not cause market disruption.
AMD announced in August it had signed an agreement to acquire ZT Systems for US$4.9 billion (NT$161.69 billion) in a bid to expand its portfolio of artificial intelligence chips and hardware.
"AI systems are our number one strategic priority," AMD CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰) said in an interview with Reuters at the time.
