TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan’s Orthodox Luermen Shengmu Temple will hold its annual fireworks show on Feb. 8.
The temple hosts a yearly fireworks display around the Lantern Festival, which falls on Feb. 12 this year. The show creates a 360-degree panoramic visual effect as the fireworks encircle the entire temple, per Koha and UDN.
Mazu, also known as the Heavenly Empress, is a symbol of protection. Initially worshipped by early immigrants who placed her statues on their ships for safe sea voyages, her role later grew to include safeguarding communities and fostering unity.
The 2024 fireworks lasted 20 minutes and is expected to run for 40 minutes this year. Featuring the latest firework technology, the display will be synchronized with music, creating an immersive audiovisual experience. The main venue will be the plaza in front of the temple.

As the fireworks will surround the entire temple, spectators can also choose to view them from nearby areas, such as the open space along the Luermen River or the grassy area next to the Guanyin Pavilion. For those wishing to avoid the crowds, higher vantage points in surrounding suburbs, such as open fields in Annan District, can also see the fireworks.
In 2024, the temple introduced new measures to prevent early spot reservations, limiting photography slots to 220. These were fully booked within two hours.
