TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The special delegation for the US inauguration, led by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), is scheduled to meet with President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) this week.
Delegation member and KMT Legislator Lee Yen-hsiu (李彥秀) confirmed on Monday that the group will speak with Lai on Jan. 16 about their trip itinerary and future Taiwan-US diplomatic and civil exchanges, CNA reported. She predicted legislative affairs would arise during the meeting but would not dominate the talks.
The main goal of the meeting is to foster a better atmosphere for communication and dialogue between the president and legislators, she said.
Lai selected Han to lead the delegation for Trump’s inauguration as a gesture of goodwill. He invited Han to a meeting multiple times following the National Day celebrations but has always been rejected.
The delegation will be in the US from Jan. 18-24. The trip is intended to demonstrate the Legislative Yuan’s bipartisan support for Taiwan-US relations and congratulate Trump on his second term, according to Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.
