TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Los Angeles office donated personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies to emergency responders and evacuees of the ongoing wildfires in California on Saturday.
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles Deputy Director Chen Ling-Hsin (陳令欣) delivered 10,000 N95 masks and three boxes of protective goggles, according to CNA. Chen said the office is closely monitoring the situation and advised Taiwanese nationals, students, and travelers in California to stay updated on the fires and prioritize their safety.
The PPE supplies, donated by a Taiwanese expatriate, were delivered to TECO-LA through China Airlines’ US headquarters. The office is working with Tzu Chi USA to distribute the items to those on the front lines.
Tzu Chi USA also organized a prayer meeting on Saturday alongside the LA Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Hainan Association Southern California, and other local organizations to support affected residents.
Tzu Chi USA CEO Debra Boudreaux (曾慈慧) said the organization established care centers immediately after the fires began, providing shelter, blankets, clothing, N95 masks, food, and other essential items. Volunteers have visited three major evacuation centers to assist evacuees.
Boudreaux noted that in addition to physical losses, many residents in the Greater Los Angeles area are experiencing emotional distress. Tzu Chi is collaborating with local mental health counseling centers to offer long-term support and assistance.
As of Saturday, at least 11 deaths have been reported. Approximately 180,000 residents have been forced to evacuate, and more than 10,000 structures have been destroyed.
