TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan and the United States sat down in Washington, D.C. to discuss the former country’s participation in international organizations, the State Department said Friday.
The meeting took place Wednesday between representatives of the US Department of State and of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Discussions focused on the United Nations, its related bodies, and other global forums, a State Department news release said.
The statement mentioned the World Health Assembly and the International Civil Aviation Organization by name. It also expressed support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international and regional groups outside the UN system.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry described the discussions as part of a regular annual work meeting, while thanking the US side for its support. In addition to looking back at the achievements of 2024, the talks focused on future promotional strategies, according to the ministry.
US delegates at Friday’s meeting praised Taiwan for its “exceptional expertise and valuable contributions” in areas including health, environmental protection, and law enforcement. All present at the meeting underlined the need to cooperate with partners worried about attempts to exclude Taiwan from the global community.
