TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan is preparing for the 11th round of fishery talks with Japan to be hosted in Tokyo next week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
The Taiwan-Japan Relations Association will hold discussions with the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association from Jan. 14-16. The regular meetings are a result of an agreement signed between the two countries in April 2013.
A bilateral Taiwan-Japan Fishery Committee has since met alternately in Taiwan and Japan, with the most recent edition convening in Taipei in March last year. MOFA said in a statement Friday it would continue to promote the sharing of resources and cooperation. The safety and rules-based order for fishing by both countries were paramount, according to MOFA.
The waters between Taiwan and Japan have been rich fishing grounds for decades but also include disputed areas like the Diaoyutai Islands, where Japanese coast guard frigates have stopped Taiwanese fishing trawlers.
