TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau said Wednesday it was expanding its search for Taiwanese who also hold Chinese passports.
A recent documentary claimed that China is trying to attract Taiwanese to apply for residency and other identification documents in China by promising them favorable terms for the repayment of loans. The report also put the number of Taiwanese holding Chinese IDs at 100,000.
The MJIB confirmed Wednesday it had found some Taiwanese in the possession of Chinese documents and would refer them to the Ministry of Interior. In its statement, the MJIB said it would expand its investigation into the case, per CNA.
Individuals having obtained a Chinese ID could lose the right to vote in Taiwan and other benefits tied to residency, such as health insurance and long-term care. Their income in Taiwan would become a target for Chinese tax authorities, the MJIB said.
The investigation bureau called on citizens not to fall for Beijing’s tactics, but to help protect national sovereignty.
