TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp. Chair Fang Leuh (方略) said Wednesday the chip industry is likely to see growth this year despite global uncertainties.
At a year-end banquet, Fang said the global environment is unpredictable, citing US President-elect Donald Trump’s policies and the US-China trade war, per CNA.
On Dec. 23, the US launched a Section 301 investigation into China’s semiconductor industry, targeting its defense industry. Washington said it will work with partners on chip production and address concerns about China’s policies.
Additionally, on Nov. 25, Trump said he would slap big tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, per Reuters. He also said he would impose an additional 10% tariff on China over fentanyl, per The Guardian.
Even so, Fang said global economic growth is expected to be 3.3% this year, per Liberty Times. The semiconductor industry is projected to experience moderate growth, he added.
Regarding VIS’ US$7.8 billion (NT$256 billion) joint venture with Dutch NXP, Fang explained the fab in Singapore is ahead of schedule. The company broke ground on Dec. 4, with production slated for 2027.
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, global chip sales reached US$57.8 billion in November, a 20.7% year-on-year increase.
