TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Taiwanese man who served 15 years in a Thai jail for smuggling heroin returned home Wednesday accompanied by Taiwan law enforcement agents.
Huang (黃) was accused of smuggling 24.18 kilograms of heroin bricks in furniture from Thailand to Taiwan in 2007 for NT$500,000 (US$15,200). After the cargo arrived in Keelung, the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau found the drugs during a search of containers, per CNA.
Thai police arrested Huang in January 2009, and a court sentenced him to 30 years and three months in prison in the northern province of Chiang Rai. Due to several amnesties, he was released in November after 15 years and 10 months.
On Wednesday, agents of the MJIB, the National Immigration Agency, and the Criminal Investigation Bureau accompanied Huang on a flight from Thailand to Taiwan. Upon his arrival, he will be questioned by Keelung prosecutors.
